The second season is when Buffy the Vampire Slayer really hits its stride, moving away from the "monster of the week" format of season one and giving us a complex and dramatic storyline which plays out over several episodes.
In the first half of the season we see our heroes pairing off - shy Willow hooks up with cool boyfriend Oz, outcast Xander somehow gets together with head cheerleader Cordelia and Giles, Buffy's mentor, begins a relationship with teacher Jenny Calendar.
Even vampire Spike, a fan favourite introduced in the third episode of this season, has his own girlfriend - mad, bad Drusilla, a fellow bloodsucker.
But it's Buffy's relationship with "good" vampire Angel which becomes the focus of the show's second season, as it all goes horribly wrong . . .
By the time we reach the end, every one of the characers has grown. Or, in some cases, died. And it's all told with Joss Whedon's usual panache. At times, Buffy the Vampire Slayer is very, very funny.
