The second chapter in Alan Moore's epic League of Extraordinary Gentlemen story, which will span three volumes taking in much of the twentieth century. Mina Harker, Allan Quatermain and Orlando face demons, wizards and a rock star who looks a lot like Mick Jagger.

Paint It Black

The basic idea behind The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a brilliant one - well-known characters from vintage fantasy fiction, such as the Invisible Man, Captain Nemo and Dr Jekyll get together to fight nefarious enemies such as Fu Manchu and Professor Moriarty.

By this stage in the series, however, the only well-known name left is Mina Harker, Dracula's former love. She is accompanied by two less well-known characters, as they take on a demon in the swinging sixties, complete with drugs, a fair amount of nudity and a rock and roll band loosely based on the Rolling Stones.

Verdict

The Good:
A fast-moving story is accompanied by Kevin O'Neill's colourful and detail-packed artwork.
The Bad:
It's a pity there aren't more well-known fantasy characters left in the League - those that remain are a bit B-List.

Conclusion:
Enjoyable fun but not classic Moore.
