Well made but traditional horror film

A typical small American town is hit by a series of tragedies as its citizens turn on each other. As the situation spirals out of control, the military arrives to clear up the mess.

For the town sheriff, played by Timothy Olyphant, the challenge is to stay alive and protect his wife when the pair are threatened both by infected townsfolk - the "crazies" of the film's title - and gas-masked soldiers who have been ordered to shoot to kill.

Although not a zombie film, it's got a similar vibe. At times, The Crazies is genuinely scary and there's always an air of menace.

Verdict

The Good:
A well-made film with plenty of shocks.
The Bad:
Horror fans will have seen plenty of similar films before, although this is one of the best.
Conclusion:
Never camp or silly, The Crazies is a high-quality horror film aided by a fine performance by Timothy Olyphant.
