Review: The King's Speech

This film is set at a key point in history in the run-up to the Second World War. While Hitler has German audiences in the palm of his hand with his insane yet spellbinding speeches, the Duke of York - thrust suddenly into the role of King - suffers from a debilitating stammer.

Verdict

The Good:
A great performance from Colin Firth who manages to convey George VI's stiff, aristocratic manner while still making him likeable - quite a feat. Helena Bonham Carter as Queen Elizabeth, mother of Britain's current Queen, is also wonderful. A pillar of strength for her husband, she privately shares his pain as he struggles to cope with his duties.
The Bad:
It doesn't quite feel like a movie - more like a very high quality television drama. But that doesn't make it any less enjoyable.
Conclusion:
More intelligent, more moving and more engrossing than the average film, it doesn't quite live up to the hype. Still, it has some of the best acting and one of the best scripts you're likely to come across in any movie this year.
