What if mutants ruled the world?

The X-Men is partly a tale of the conflict between Charles Xavier, who believes mutants such as his X-Men and humans can learn to live in peace together, and Magneto, the mutant "terrorist leader", who believes mutants will always be in danger from humans until they become the dominant species.

House of M gives us a world where Magento's dream has become reality, thanks to the reality-warping powers of Wanda, his daughter.

There's a lot of mind-bending alternate reality fun, as we learn what has happened to well-known Marvel characters in this brave new world, and a little bit of philosophising as some of the heroes debate whether things have actually changed for the better. And a big, big fight at the end.

Verdict

The Good:
It's based on an interesting premise and it's always fun to see how your favourite characters are portrayed in alternate realities. The whole story has a really epic feel and writer Brian Bendis manages to give every member of his massive cast something to do.
The Bad:
The ending has been widely criticised by comic fans. Essentially, the book introduces a new character to the Marvel universe who appears to have been created just to resolve the storyline. However, there are also a few twists and turns before we reach the end.
Conclusion:
This is truly a world-changing tale in the Marvel Universe and essential reading for X-Men fans in particular, as the storylines in today's comics are still influenced by the events of House of M.

But the book also stands on its own merits as a good read which has a lot of fun with some of Marvel's most famous characters.
