A New Hope

This all-action tale brings together just about every mutant in the Marvel universe, including the extended X-Men family and a range of villains.

But while there are plenty of fight scenes, portrayed by Marvel's finest artists, there's also drama as the X-Men discover that one of their own has kidnapped the so-called mutant messiah - and a second X-Man also has a secret agenda.

Meanwhile, Scott is forced to push Professor Xavier to the sidelines as he becomes undisputed leader of the X-Men. But will Professor X really step aside to easily?

All in all it's quite a ride and, while there's quite a contrast between the styles of some of the artists who contributed to this book, the quality of the visuals never falters.

Verdict

The Good:
An action-packed superhero soap opera which collects issues from a range of different comic books but reads like one coherent tale.

There's fine artwork throughout and a chance to get to know some of the lesser-known members of the X-Men cast, who really shine when they get their turn in the spotlight.

But Scott Summers is the star of the show, and we get to see Scott - long overshadowed by more colourful characters such as Wolverine or Jean Grey - emerge as a complex and sometimes ruthless leader of the X-Men.
The Bad:
A number of different artists contribute to this collection and the switch from one to another can sometimes be jarring.
Conclusion:
Plenty of twists, plenty of turns, some big names die and we gain new insights into some of the regular X-Men cast. Worth reading.
